Best players of the season in Romania: right-backs

  1. Vasile Maftei, 30 years old.

    VASILE MAFTEI – Unirea Urziceni

  2. Rui Duarte – FC Brasov
  3. Eder Bonfim – FC Timisoara
  4. Florin Popete – Pandurii Targu Jiu
  5. Anthony da Silva “Tony” – CFR Cluj

My view: Excellent example for Romania’s lack of options at right back in the national team, with a winner who has been playing as a centre-back until two years ago and the only other Romanian in the top five – a below average 32 years old like Popete, who relegated with Pandurii at the end of the season. In such a mediocre company – Tony could have done more, but has rarely played for CFR, while Dananae from Universitatea Craiova was out for a long, long time, after a severe injury -, Maftei fully deserves to take this.

My choices: I’m honestly surprised to see FC Vaslui’s Milanov missing the top five (affected by Gazeta’s marks and the bonus system that involves the team’s performances, not just the player’s), who has been very consistent, has adjusted immediately after his transfer and was as impressive on the right, as he was on the opposite flank. Rapid had two good right backs, Helder and Sapunaru (why in the world was this guy left out from the national team?), I would have liked to see more Craiova’s Barboianu on this position, as he was used too much as a defensive midfielder, but everyone’s mad this summer about Otelul’s Cornel Rapa.

Note: the top five is taken from Gazeta Sporturilor, a newspaper that uses the service of Digital Soccer Project. These results are based on a series of specific criteria for each position, include only players that have collected at least 1.200 minutes on the pitch in the past season and the only subjective part of the analysis consists in the average marks received by the newspaper’s writers.

Valentin Iliev joins Universitatea Craiova

  • Universitatea Craiova signed Valentin Iliev (29), a Bulgarian central defender who comes from Terek Grozni. The experienced centre-back – 18 caps for the National Team – signed a contract until June 2011 and is Universitatea’s first important signing under Dutch manager Mark Wotte.
  • Dinu Daniel Sanmartean (28) follows his older brother, Lucian, to FC Vaslui. Released by Gloria Bistrita, the once promising left back makes a surprising move to this ambitious club, but will be only a backup solution for a team that will rely mostly on the Portuguese Hugo Duarte Luz (27) and the recently acquired Bulgarian left back Zhivko Milanov (25).

Dubarbier to Lorient, Ionita to FC Cologne

  • Lorient signed Sebastian Dubarbier (23), from CFR Cluj. For 2 mil. EUR, the French outfit landed a very good deal, as the Argentinian left winger has the qualities to adjust to the Ligue 1 style of play and could further increase his market value over the next couple of years. Dubarbier leaves CFR after 57 matches played and 11 goals scored in the league and, except this first half of season, when he clearly felt frustrated by the club’s refusal to sell him and played below his ability, deserves a place in the top 10 foreign footballers that ever played in Liga I.
  • Alexandru Ionita‘s (20) move to FC Koln has been finalized, although surprising reports still appear in the press, regarding interest from Italy and France. The striker was in Germany yesterday, where he passed the medical exam, while the Bundesliga outfit pushed all the way to finish the deal, in spite of continuous bargaining (Turkish market style) from Rapid. In the end, Koln agreed to everything (Rapid even asked for an extra 5% as training&education fee, although Ionita was a product of Rapid’s youth system!) and will pay 2,5 mil. EUR for the U21 international, will pay the 5% in the summer and will also leave Ionita in Bucharest until the end of the season. Coach Zvonimir Soldo explained: “We’ve been watching him since his debut for the first team, I believe he’s a very talented player and will feature in my plans for the coming season”.
  • Unirea Alba Iulia completed the loan of Ramon Nunez (24) from Cruz Azul, in exchange of 25.000 EUR. The central midfielder will stay in Romania until the summer, when he’s expected to play for Honduras at the World Cup, with Cruz Azul hoping that his presence in Europe and performances from South Africa will help them sell the player to a bigger club.
  • Universitatea Craiova loaned experienced left back Silviu Balace (31) from FC Vaslui, until the end of the season. The once promising defender, famous for his resemblance with Pavel Nedved, both in physical appearance and style of play, was out of favor at FC Vaslui, who also managed to buy this winter a Bulgarian international on his position, Zhivko Milanov.

Second important transfer for FC Vaslui

The surprise of the first half of season signed another important player, after Lucian Sanmartean (29): Bulgarian right back Zhivko Milanov (25) signed a contract with the club owned by former international referee Adrian Porumboiu. The defender comes from Levski Sofia, where he collected over 120 appearances in the league, and is a Bulgarian international, with 14 caps. He signed a three years long contract and FC Vaslui apparently paid 350.000 EUR for his transfer.
