Wotte, asked to leave Universitatea Craiova!

May 2, 2010 1 comment

The home defeat against International Curtea de Arges could have been Mark Wotte’s last game in charge. Apparently, after the defeat that threy Universitatea back in the relegation battle, the club’s owner Adrian Mititelu asked the Dutchman to resign ;-), lacking probably the funds to dismiss him before the end of the season. Although the papers announced this morning that Wotte isn’t Universitatea’s coach anymore, with the veteran player Eugen Trica ready to take over (although he cannot sit on the bench as a coach, lacking the license), the club denied the information on the official website, saying that it’s pure speculation. It’s not.

What’s real is Mititelu’s fear that his team might go down and I was expecting such an intervention when the much contested owner stated yesterday that he hopes to take the best decision in the next few days, which should boost the team’s chances to find again a way out of this mess. Well, the only decision a club owner knows in these cases is getting rid of the coach! 🙂

Although Wotte is definitely a good coach, he needs full backing, time and credit from the board – things very hard to find in Romania, especially in Craiova. The Dutchman insisted on playing a very young team, which was a good call in the long run, but not the wisest on short term, as Wotte saw the results of a lack of footballing culture at these promising players, who are technically gifted, no doubt about that, but lack mentality, discipline and tactical knowledge.

So far, under Wotte, Craiova played 13 games: 5 wins, 1 draw and 7 losses. Best result: Rapid – Universitatea 0-1. Games Wotte shoudn’t have lost: 1-2 against Gaz Metan Medias, 0-2 against Unirea Alba Iulia, 1-4 against International. Well, the Americans would have put it like this: striker 1, strike 2, strike 3. You’re out!
