One of Mircea Lucescu’s pupils trying a remake of the successful “Brescia romena”

Rednic spent almost half of million Euros to get Cesinha, a risky bet judging by the Brazilian's never-ending medical problems

The “director” is Mircea Rednic, former Liga I champion with Dinamo and Rapid. The setting is in Azerbaidjan, where Rednic tries to interrupt Neftchi Baku’s supremacy with FK Khazar Lankaran, a team he took over in July 2010, signing a two seasons long deal, with the sights set on winning the title. After 19 rounds, he’s just one point behind Neftci and fully convinced that with a slightly stronger side he could deliver even at the end of his first season in charge.

In December, he returned to Romania on an active vacation, stating his interest in over a dozen players from Liga I and entering negotiations with several teams, including his former clubs. It wasn’t enough that he had already in the team four Romanian players (Iordache – 30 years old, centre back; Arbanas – 27, utility defender; Doman – 22, attacking midfielder; Stelian Stancu – 29, right midfielder) and two other players recruited from Liga I (Romanovs – 32, goalkeeper; Parks – 29, striker), he wanted more. A lot more. Slowly, he started to work on his long shortlist, checking one target after another and, at this point, with no sign that he’s satisfied, has closed deals with Dinamo, Rapid, Pandurii and Gloria Bistrita and could return to Azerbaidjan with 6 new players from Liga I. Here they are:

  • Andrei Muresan – defensive midfielder, 25, bought from Gloria Bistrita, although he was also a target for Rapid Bucharest!
  • Carlos Cesinha – left winger, 30, bought from Rapid, where he looked classy at times, but had became inconsistent and prone to injuries lately.
  • Carlos Cardoso – left back, 25, bought from Pandurii Targu Jiu. Was also a target for Dinamo!
  • Nicolae Musat – left back, 24, loaned from Dinamo, with a buying option in the summer
  • Adrian Scarlatache – right back/centre back, 24, loaned from Dinamo, with a buying option in the summer
  • Georgian Paun – forward, 25, loaned from Dinamo, with a buying option in the summer

If the last four will probably be utility/reliable players, Muresan and Cesinha can be considered very good deals, with the anchorman very useful in adding steel in midfield and organizing the build-up and the Brazilian an excellent forward on his day! All the deals required an investment of around one million Euros, so, if it’s true that Rednic has another half of million available, it won’t be a surprise to see others joining the colony, having the chance not just to earn more money than in Romania, but also to win some trophies…

They bought Unirea’s top players, but couldn’t kill the team’s spirit

After this summer's sale, there's nothing ideal left in Urziceni

As expected, Unirea Urziceni, the team lead by Dan Petrescu to a record eigth points in the Champions League’s group stage, was dismantled by the other title contenders, at the beginning of the season. The season that was going to be Unirea’s last in the Liga I, with relegation as sure “as death and taxes”, after the departure of an entire squad. Reserves and coaches included, plus several staff members. The club was going down, but not without a fight.

Players out: Pablo Brandan, Laurentiu Marinescu, George Galamaz, Ricardo Gomes, Iulian Apostol, Marius Onofras and Marius Bilasco (Steaua Bucharest); Adrian Neaga and Sorin Paraschiv (Volyn Lutsk); Valeriu Bordeanu (Dinamo), Sorin Frunza (Rapid), Catalin Grigore (Astra Ploiesti), Dan Matei (FCM Targu Mures), Maurice Junior Dale (Panserraikos); Daniel Tudor, Petre Marin, Bruno Fernanded (released).

Well, the fight started right away, after the appointment of Octavian Grigore, and has made a series of high profile collateral victims. In the last four rounds, Urziceni suffered a heavy defeat at the hand of league leaders Otelul Galati, but managed to snatch three wins against as many serious title contenders. The last two of them came with the same score, 1-0, on the same impossible home ground for those who’d try to play ball, against the mighty Steaua and Dinamo. Read more…

Done deals (V)

  • Former Steaua and Universitatea Craiova striker, Valentin Badea (27), found an agreement with Politehnica Iasi until the end of the season and will try to help the club avoid relegation. Badea played just under 150 matches in the top flight, scoring 47 goals in the process, but has also international experience, having played and scored for Steaua in European competitions.
  • Dinamo’s eternal reserve goalie, Florin Matache (27), has finally left the club, and not on another loan deal. “The Liberec hero”, as nicknamed after his last excellent display for the Red Dogs, agreed to a move to Universitatea Cluj, in the second division, but the club has an excellent chance of promotion at the end of the current season. Matache will stay in Cluj for two and a half years and joins other former Dinamo players (used mainly in the reserve team), like Andrei Nitu (central defender), George Busca (versatile defender), Nicolae Musat (left back), Dan Busca (defensive midfielder), Valentin Lemnaru (striker) and Andrei Voican (striker). All joined the club since last summer, when former Dinamo shareholder took over Universitatea and started an ambitious project for the most beloved club from Cluj.
