Today’s press

  • Brazilian anchorman Ricardo Vilana Gomes (28) refuses to return to Romania, although his club, Unirea Urziceni, resumed training for more than two weeks now. The player claims that he wasn’t paid according to his contract, while the club is threatening with a suspension until the end of the current deal. Romanian press speculates about a possible interest from FC Timisoara, but I highly doubt it, given that the Viola outfit has already two very good defensive midfielders, Dan Alexa and Alexandru Bourceanu, and the coach often struggles to keep both of them satisfied.
  • Andrea Mandorlini is reportedly interested in signing Italian attacking midfielder Roberto De Zerbi (30), who played last season for Avellino, in Serie B, scoring 5 goals in 15 appearances. In spite of several names from Italy mentioned so far as transfer targets for CFR, Mandorlini’s only signing from Serie A is Romanian forward Nicola Dica, bought from Catania, via Iraklis.

Done deals

  • CFR Cluj presented today threee new faces: former Steaua and Catania attacking midfielder Nicolae Dica (29),  Cristian Bud (24), transferred a few months ago from Gaz Metan Medias, where the striker had scored 11 times in 32 matches, and the left back Kasali Yinka Casal (22), a surprising aquisition, from Swindon Town.
  • Gaz Metan Medias found a replacement for Bud’s departure and signed a striker raised in Steaua’s youth ranks: Alin Litu. He’s 23 years old, has a rather poor scoring record in the league (4 goals in 60 matches!), where he played until now for Steaua, Pandurii Targu Jiu and Gloria Buzau.
  • FC Timisoara allowed talented full back Iasmin Latovlevici to go on loan to Gloria Bistrita until the end of the current campaign, in order to keep playing regularly. The left back has 33 matches in the first division, but played only twice this season and, with the costly aquisition of Laszlo Sepsi, there would have been no room for him in the first team.

Dica, back in Romania

The attacking midfielder returns to Liga I after two unconvincing seasons spent abroad. CFR Cluj announced today that the player will be loaned until the end of the season, when a permanent move will be discussed.

Bought by Catania in 2008 (I’m sure Walter Zenga had some explaining to do…), played only three games in Serie A and, after a terrible season, was loaned to Greek club Iraklis, where he scored three times in 13 matches and probably re-gained some of the lost confidence and match fitness.

Dica (29) was an excellent aquisition for Steaua, playing and scoring regularly for the Bucharest side both in the league (54 goals in 125 matches) and in the European competitions.  He also collected 30 caps for the national team, scoring 9 times, but his international career suffered once he left Romania. A gifted player, no doubt, Dica misses in my opinion one important quality, which is pace, and going to Italy, although very tempting, was a bad decision for him, who could have made an impact in leagues that offer a bit of pace to attackers, like Germany.

Dica can play almost everywhere in attack, but offers most to the team as a central attacking midfielder. And CFR Cluj really missed a creative player in this area, all its midfielders being defensive minded and lacking the ability to pose a threat in the last 25 meters. So, at least theoretically, this looks like a good, logical move and CFR proved again to have a board that does its homework during the season and moves well once the mercato window is open.
