The latest “New Hagi” has a great future. But not in professional football

July 6, 2010 2 comments

Cosmin Matei has agreed a five years long deal with Steaua, after spending almost a month under Ronny Levy’s command, at Unirea Urziceni! The 18 years old was kind enough to explain this surprising switch: ” I refused to sign for Unirea, as I couldn’t adjust to the team’s tactics. I was asked to defend, while I’m an attacking player“.

For those still interested in more details about the latest youngster labelled as “The New Hagi”, Matei (175 cm/65 kg) was raised by Farul Constanta (second division), has been a regular in the youth national teams, couldn’t be sold alongside Denis Alibec to Inter Milano, but moves to a title contender for 250.000 Euros, where he’ll probably play alongside the “The New Balaci”, Andrei Ionescu, for the reserve team, until his IQ reaches at least the same number as his body weight.

Tomorrow, starting 14.00 (Bucharest time), Romania faces Italy, on Rapid’s stadium, in a match that counts for Group A of “International Challenge Trophy”, a competition dedicated to players born after 1st of January 1986.

Romania’s team was selected and will be guided by Razvan Lucescu, who failed miserably with the useless friendly against Israel, a week ago, but now has a chance to see on the pitch promising players who could be a solution for the senior team in the near future (in bold you can see who I believe to be fitting this profile).

Here is the full list:

Goalkeepers: Ciprian Tatarusanu (Steaua), Alexandru Pena (AS Roma – Primavera)

Defenders: Bogdan Straut (Poli Iasi), Sergiu Homei (Gloria Bistrita – on loan from Dinamo), Dragos Grigore (Dinamo), Cristian Sarghi (Otelul Galati), Razvan Patriche (Sportul Studentesc – second division), Alexandru Tudose (Steaua), Iasmin Latovlevici (Gloria Bistrita – on loan from FC Timisoara), Laszlo Sepsi (FC Timisoara)

Midfielders: Liviu Antal (Otelul Galati), Hristu Chiacu (FC Timisoara), Vasile Olariu (Victoria Branesti – second division), Mihai Radut (International Curtea de Arges), Mihai Onicas (Poli Iasi – on loan from Steaua), Andrei Ionescu (Poli Iasi – on loan from Steaua), Alexandru Curtean (FC Timisoara), Paul Parvulescu (Gaz Metan Medias)

Forwards: Alexandru Ionita (Rapid), Bogdan Stancu (Steaua), Alin Litu (Gaz Metan Medias), Marius Alexe (Dinamo).

  • Defenders: Alexandru Matel (Farul Constanta), Stefan Barboianu (Universitatea Craiova), Cornel Rapa (Otelul Galati), Paul Papp (FC Vaslui), Florin Gardos (Concordia Chiajna), Radu Barbu (Universitatea Craiova), Silviu Ilie (OtelulGalati)
  • Midfielders: Gabriel Torje (Dinamo), Andrei Ionescu (Steaua/Politehnica Iasi), Calin Cristea (Unirea Alba Iulia), Constantin Gangioveanu (Universitatea Craiova), Razvan Ochirosii (Steaua/Otelul Galati)
  • Forwards: Sabrin Sburlea (FC Brasov), Mihai Costea (Universitatea Craiova), Liviu Ganea (Dinamo/Astra Ploiesti), Alexandru Ionita (Rapid), Raul Rusescu (Unirea Urziceni), Ioan Hora (Gloria Bistrita)

If this is indeed just a test ahead of the next official matches, than coach Emil Sandoi proves yet again a frightening lack of vision and guts! A simple overview points out the following facts: Read more…

Poli Iasi lands Steaua’s rising stars

    • Andrei Ionescu (21) moves to Politehnica Iasi, on loan, until the end of the season. The talented attacking midfielder had found little space at Steaua, where he arrived in 2008 with the wonderkid label, but was given little space to prove himself among the seniors, collecting only 16 appearances in the Liga I until now. At Iasi, he’ll work under the guidance of Petre Grigoras and will join former team-mate Mihai Onicas (20), who’s also on loan, until the summer.
