You can find below the captain’s goodbye note, but I find very interesting some comments made by some Romanians involved in the game.
Ioan Sdrobis, one of Chivu’s first coaches: “He just proved that he’s not a man. He left the battlefield, in the middle of the war – he could have done this after the games versus Bosnia.”
Ioan Becali, Chivu’s agent: “I had no idea, but in the end we have to respect his choice. I think that his wife Adelina talked him into this.”
Gheorghe Hagi, legend: “He was an outstanding player for the national team and we have to be proud of what he did for Romania. I’ve known him as a person and as a player and I say with all my heart that he has my outmost respect.”
Not hard to tell the difference between a bitter old man, a greedy agent and someone who knows what’s it all about, right?
I have reached a difficult time of in my life, one that I’ve always thought of with fear, but cannot be delayed anymore. My playing career under Romania’s flag is over. My age, the injuries, the surgical interventions that I’ve gone through in recent years keep me from playing on several fronts. With this decision, one of the most important periods of my life comes to an end and now, when I look back, I feel pride, honor and gratitude.
I was, I still am and will always be one of Romania’s most passionate fans and it was my honor to captain this team. For 12 years I’ve been a part of this family, I had the privilege to score goals under Romania’s colors, to play football with the sound of our national anthem in my ears and to run until my energy tank dries out for the pride of my fellow Romanians. I did it with all my heart, as a sportsman and Romanian.
It is hard for me to stop this journey, but I know that I won’t cease to be a Romanian, to support all the Romanian sportsmen and footballers and to be the biggest fan of the Romanian national team. My heart beats for the country and for my family and this will never change, no matter my age or my health.
I would like to thank with all my heart to all those who’ve supported me in my international career, coaches, team-mates, members of the Federation, fans, members of my family, to my wife and our two daughters, for these 12 years that have changed my life.
Go Romania! Let’s be proud that we’re Romanians!
Signed: Cristi Chivu, Romanian and football player
Well, this is, more or less, what I expected. Although Lucescu Jr. seems determined to stick to a 4-4-2, the players selected, the trained&tried moves, the ability to switch from a defensive approach to a very offensive one during the game, all speak of a team that is finally working on a style, while adding the needed new faces. And the coach deserves credit for that. For his mistakes, he will always pay, look at the decision to field Lobont (out of form and severely lacking match fitness – please forgive the Football Manager language!), but this is a period when we can afford them, as long as we’ll be looking to fix them in the near future.
Anyway, in spite of the three goals, we look pretty good at the back, with Chivu pushing the line upfield and both centre-backs composed on the ball, helping the build-up. We have Goian and Galamaz in stand by, we’re rock solid there, Rat is in good shape and Sepsi – a promising reserve. But we still need a keeper and also an alternative to Maftei, on the right.
